Hartmann’s paintings are known internationally. He has exhibited in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., as well as in Moscow, Switzerland, and Iceland. The Chicago Sun-Times in 1996 called Hartmann “the most traditionally artistic of the space painters.” Arthur C. Clarke in 1996 wrote “I consider him to be the direct successor of the late, great Chesley Bonestell,” the father of Space Art. In 2002 he received the Lucien Rudaux Lifetime Achievement Award by the IAAA. Scientifically, he was first winner of the Carl Sagan Medal and is known for originating the current theory of lunar origin.
