Cosmonaut/artist Alexei Leonov honors the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova, shown in her helmet. Her personally chosen radio call sign during her 1963 flight was “Seagull.” The floating cosmonaut honors the first woman to walk in space, Svetlana Savitskaya, and the seagulls represent the other women who had flown in space at the time of the painting.
