Cosmonaut-artist Alexei Leonov depicts the reflection of light off of the lower (ashy) layer of Earth’s atmosphere, that can only be seen from space. This phenomena was first proposed by Leonov in his Master’s thesis before his 1965 Voskhod 2 spaceflight.
