FROM THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE’S FIRST IMAGES!
In this group of five galaxies, called Stephan’s Quintet, only four are truly close together and caught up in a cosmic dance. The fifth and leftmost galaxy is much closer to us. Sparkling clusters of millions of young stars and fresh star birth regions grace the image. Sweeping tails of gas, dust and stars are being pulled from several of the galaxies due to gravitational interactions. The red and gold regions surrounding the central pair are the result of huge shock waves as one of the galaxies smashes through the cluster. The background is a vast sea of many thousands of more distant galaxies.
