This combined image from NASA’s Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes shows the Orion nebula, located in the constellation of Orion. Swirls of green reveal hydrogen and sulfur gas that have been heated and ionized by intense ultraviolet radiation from four monstrously massive stars, called the Trapezium, at the center of the nebula, while red and orange wisps expose carbon-rich molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons illuminated by those same stars. Stellar winds from clusters of newborn stars scattered throughout the nebula etched all of the well-defined ridges and cavities.
