Titan’s Southern Summer

A cloudburst of methane rain showers into a canyon on Saturn’s moon Titan, flooding a river as it carves down through layers of hydrocarbon tainted ice. Convective clouds have been seen billowing upwards in the southern hemisphere during the Titanian summer, the same way thunderheads do on Earth and rainfall amounts from these clouds might be extreme. These storms can produce liquid hydrocarbon rains and river channels that erode the surface in ways similar to the way water scours the Earth. Images from Cassini revealed numerous river channels feeding lakes on Titan, which is so cold that water ice plays the role of solid rock. This is a narrow angle 30 degree field of view from Titan’s southern hemisphere.
