Astronaut Robert “Hoot” Gibson poses in 1984 for an official NASA portrait. Gibson was selected in 1978 for NASA’s Astronaut Corps. He married fellow astronaut Rhea Seddon in 1981.

Gibson flew five missions aboard the Space Shuttle, totaling 36 days in space. He was the pilot on STS-41B in 1984, and was the mission commander on STS-61C in 1986, on STS-27 in 1988, on STS-47 in 1992, and on STS-71 in 1995.
