Rhea Seddon & Robert “Hoot” Gibson – Lift 8×10

During a flight aboard a NASA zero-G training aircraft to simulate working in the weightlessness of Earth orbit, Rhea Seddon appears to effortlessly lift Robert “Hoot” Gibson over her head.

Seddon and Gibson were in the same class of candidates selected in 1978 for NASA’s Astronaut Corps, with Seddon being one of the first six women ever selected by NASA. They married each other in 1981, becoming the first astronaut couple.

Seddon flew three missions aboard the Space Shuttle, totaling 30 days in space. She was a mission specialist on STS-51D in 1985 and on STS-40 in 1991, and was the payload commander on her final flight aboard STS-58 in 1993.

Gibson flew five missions aboard the Space Shuttle, totaling 36 days in space. He was the pilot on STS-41B in 1984, and was the mission commander on STS-61C in 1986, on STS-27 in 1988, on STS-47 in 1992, and on STS-71 in 1995.
