Deke Slayton was grounded for medical reasons in 1962 before his first scheduled Mercury flight. He then managed crew selections and operations for 13 years until finally flying on Apollo-Soyuz. His odyssey is symbolized here by his Mercury flight boots, going from one boot down (watching from the sidelines for so long) to one boot up (finally getting to fly)! The intriguing linear patterns in the background were inspired by light streaming through the window blinds while this painting was being made.
