“This was the first painting I did after moving from Tucson, AZ to Boulder, CO and it was my “I miss AZ and the Grand Canyon” piece. I also used this painting to try to force myself to work ‘big’ and to loosen up my brush work a bit. My science and space art colleague Jim Scotti used to razz me a bit about my “sub-millimeter craters” in some of my artwork – I like the details! So with this piece I chose a large canvas and tried to limit myself to large, loose brush strokes. It was a bit intimidating at first but I think the end result was one of my personal favorite traditionally-painted pieces.” – Dan Durda
