STS-47 mission commander Robert “Hoot” Gibson, wearing his helmet and orange Launch and Entry Suit, sits in the commander’s position (left-hand seat) on the flight deck aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour during its September 1992 flight. This was Gibson’s fourth of five space missions, and the 50th flight of the Space Shuttle program.

Gibson was selected in 1978 for NASA’s Astronaut Corps. He married fellow astronaut Rhea Seddon in 1981. Gibson flew five missions aboard the Space Shuttle, totaling 36 days in space. He was the pilot on STS-41B in 1984, and was the mission commander on STS-61C in 1986, on STS-27 in 1988, on STS-47 in 1992, and on STS-71 in 1995.
