Astronaut Joe Engle poses for an official NASA portrait in 1986, some months after he successfully commanded the STS-51I mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery, during which three communications satellites were deployed and another was repaired while in space. He had previously successfully flown the second shuttle spaceflight aboard space shuttle Columbia in 1981, even manually flying several test maneuvers throughout the entire entry speed range between Mach 25 and landing.
