Mission commander Joe Engle poses in 1981 for his official STS-2 portrait. He and mission pilot Richard Truly would soon fly the second space shuttle flight, putting Columbia through her paces and working out some early bugs in the complex shuttle system. Engle would use his previous test piloting experience and first-hand knowledge from the X-15 rocket plane flights and the space shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) in order to manually fly several key test maneuvers throughout the entire entry speed range between Mach 25 and landing.
