Space shuttle Columbia glides (very quickly) towards an unpowered landing on the dry lakebed runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California after successfully completing the second space shuttle flight into space. Mission commander Joe Engle manually flew several test maneuvers throughout the entire entry speed range between Mach 25 and landing, using firsthand knowledge that he gained while flying the X-15 rocket research aircraft and the space shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT) performed during development of the shuttle.
