The Hubble Space Telescope has recently released some distinctly beautiful, high-resolution photos from the new Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS.) We are making these available for the first time as giclee prints, individually produced in our gallery. No doubt they will be available soon as offset printed posters, but we can offer them NOW as high-quality prints, with giclee's expanded color gamut and resolution.

Called the Cone Nebula (NGC 2264) — so named because, in ground-based images, it has a conical shape — this giant pillar resides in a turbulent star-forming region. This picture, taken by the newly installed Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, shows the upper 2.5 light-years of the nebula, a height that equals 23 million roundtrips to the Moon. The illumination of interstellar dust comes from the red supergiant star at the middle of the image, which gave off a flashbulb-like pulse of light in 2002.

Japanese and Chinese astronomers recorded this violent event nearly 1,000 years ago in 1054, as did, almost certainly, Native Americans. The orange filaments are the tattered remains of the star and consist mostly of hydrogen. Blue in the filaments in the outer part of the nebula represents neutral oxygen, green is singly-ionized sulfur, and red indicates doubly-ionized oxygen.The rapidly spinning neutron star embedded in the center of the nebula is the dynamo powering the nebula's eerie interior bluish glow. The blue light comes from electrons whirling at nearly the speed of light around magnetic field lines from the neutron star. The neutron star, like a lighthouse, ejects twin beams of radiation that appear to pulse 30 times a second due to the neutron star's rotation. It shows the Orion nebula in ...more THE ORION NEBULAAn image from NASA's Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescopes looks more like an abstract painting than a cosmic snapshot. It shows the Orion nebula in an explosion of infrared, ultraviolet and visible-light colors. At the heart is a set of four massive stars, called the Trapezium. These are 100,000 times brighter than our sun. The swirls of green were revealed by Hubble's ultraviolet and visible-light detectors. They are hydrogen and sulfur gases heated by intense ultraviolet radiation from the Trapezium's stars. Wisps of red, detected by Spitzer, indicate infrared light from illuminated clouds containing carbon-rich molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Credit: NASA, ESA, T. Dr. Carolyn Porco, the imaging team leader, ha ...more SATURNIAN ECLIPSEAn amazing PHOTOGRAPH from the Cassini spacecraft, now in a polar orbit around Saturn and its moons. Dr. Carolyn Porco, the imaging team leader, had to fight the suits for the opportunity, but as the acknowledged authority on planetary rings, she knew that backlighting the rings would reveal fine and gossamer structures never before seen. The Sun can be seen at about 7:00 on the globe, with the outer atmosphere outlining the orb of Saturn. The extended ring system, with fog-sized particles of dust and water ice are clearly seen.
