Bruce McCandless
in MMU 8x10

In this famous photo, Capt. Bruce McCandless II flies the first MMU in space, untethered and free to fly up to 1/4 mile from the shuttle, and return safely under his own power. McCandless worked on the development of this unit over many years, culminating in this test flight aboard STS-41B in 1984.

The MMU was used successfully to retrieve and work on satellites on several early shuttle missions. It was built by contractor Martin Marietta, for whom McCandless was employed after leaving NASA in the early 1990's.

McCandless was Capcom on Apollo 10 and 11 and a member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo 14 mission. He was also backup pilot for the first manned Skylab mission.
